ABOUT OUR TEAM

Maurice Nunes

Coach Maurice Nunes has actively been engaged in athletics, fitness training and weightlifting since he was a youth.  As a certified NASM performance trainer he has been guiding student athletes and fitness buffs to success for over 10 years. The continuing education he engages in allows him to stay on top of cutting-edge techniques and strategies used in the top training centres around the globe.

Nothing makes Maurice happier than seeing his clients achieve, and often surpass, their goals.  He is proud of the comradery and support at The Yard, facilitating improved self-confidence, discipline and focus on top of a stronger and healthier body.

Maurice has successfully designed customized fitness programs which have allowed student athletes to receive university scholarships abroad and play professionally.

Additionally, Maurice has successfully designed weight loss program for adolescents and adults to get them back into a healthy zone, losing substantial weight and getting off medications, in a safe and healthy way.  Leading physicians, who regularly send their patients to MoDex, approve this program based on the success that they regularly see.

In 2018 Maurice’s life changed forever when he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke and became completely paralyzed on his left side. He quickly made the decision that this temporary setback would allow him to  come back healthier and stronger than before.  Using his knowledge of body mechanics, kinesiology and nutrition, he created a program to heal himself.

Maurice was up walking with a walker in 6 weeks, walking on his own in 12 weeks and completed a 5k race shortly after.   This experience was a catalyst to improving all aspects of his life:  Implementing much healthier eating habits, Ensuring he gets the sleep he needs and Managing stress through meditation and prayer.  Before the stroke he always believed he was healthy because he was strong.  But now he understands that being healthy is the optimal mind and body connection that has nothing to do with how much you can lift.

Maurice created the NGO HA! Hypertension Awareness to educate the Caribbean population on the dangers of hypertension, stroke and heart disease and how to implement prevention strategies so no other families need to suffer the way he and his family did.

Maurice now works with stroke patients and their families to educate and support them through this journey and to get the patients back to independence using the training he has gained along with his personal experience.

Maurice is now completing a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology from the University of Trinidad & Tobago, expected 2023.
